How to Convert HEIC to JPG Without Uploading Your Photos

Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac, Windows, Linux or in the browser without sending photos to a server. Step-by-step methods plus how to check for hidden uploads.

The safest way to convert HEIC to JPG is to do it on your own device: with a built-in tool on Mac, Windows or Linux, or with a converter that runs inside your browser instead of uploading files. This guide walks through each option and shows how to verify that a website really is not sending your photos anywhere.

Why does it matter where the conversion happens?

Because a photo contains much more than the picture you see. When you send a HEIC file to a typical online converter, the whole file, including its metadata, is copied to a server you know nothing about. Most services promise to delete uploads after a few hours, but you have no way to confirm that, and the copy has already left your control.

Consider what is often in an ordinary phone photo:

  • Faces of family members, children and friends.
  • Documents such as IDs, contracts, prescriptions or screenshots of bank details that people photograph instead of scanning.
  • The inside of your home, the view from your window, your car’s license plate.
  • Hidden metadata (EXIF) describing exactly when and where the photo was taken.

For holiday snapshots the risk may feel small. For a passport photo for a visa application or a picture of a medical document, it is not.

What hidden information is inside an iPhone photo?

An iPhone HEIC typically contains the capture date and time, the camera model and lens, exposure settings and, if Location Services are enabled for the Camera, GPS coordinates accurate to a few meters. This information is stored as EXIF metadata and travels with the file when you copy, upload or convert it.

EXIF fieldExampleWhy it matters
GPS latitude / longitude55.6761, 12.5683Can reveal your home or your child’s school
Date and time2026:10:03 07:42:18Shows routines and when you are away
Device make and modelApple iPhone 15 ProIdentifies the device
Lens and exposuref/1.78, 1/120 s, ISO 64Mostly harmless

You can check a photo’s location on the iPhone by opening it in Photos and swiping up. To share without location, tap Share → Options at the top of the share sheet and switch off Location before sending.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac?

macOS can read HEIC natively, so you need no extra software. There are three built-in methods.

Method 1: Finder Quick Action (best for batches)

  1. Select one or more HEIC files in Finder.
  2. Right-click and choose Quick Actions → Convert Image.
  3. Set Format to JPEG and choose an image size (Actual Size keeps full resolution).
  4. Click Convert to JPEG. The JPG copies are saved next to the originals.

This option is available on macOS Monterey (12) and later.

Method 2: Preview (best for single files)

  1. Open the HEIC in Preview.
  2. Choose File → Export.
  3. Set Format to JPEG and adjust the Quality slider. Leaving it around three quarters of the way is a good balance.
  4. Click Save.

Method 3: Terminal with sips (best for scripting)

macOS includes a command-line image tool called sips. To convert every HEIC in the current folder at quality 90:

for f in *.HEIC; do
  sips -s format jpeg -s formatOptions 90 "$f" --out "${f%.*}.jpg"
done

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?

Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC only after you add two components from the Microsoft Store: HEIF Image Extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions. Some PCs already have an HEVC codec from the manufacturer; on others, Microsoft charges a small fee for it.

Once both are installed:

  1. Right-click the HEIC file and choose Open with → Paint.
  2. Choose File → Save as → JPEG picture.
  3. Pick a folder and click Save.

Paint handles one image at a time. The Photos app can also open HEIC files once the extensions are installed, and depending on your Windows version it offers a Save as option where you can pick JPG.

If you are on a work computer where you cannot install Store apps, or you have dozens of files, a local browser-based converter (see below) is usually quicker.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Linux?

Use heif-convert from the libheif project, which is packaged by most distributions. On Debian or Ubuntu:

sudo apt install libheif-examples
heif-convert -q 90 IMG_0001.HEIC IMG_0001.jpg

To convert a whole folder:

for f in *.HEIC; do heif-convert -q 90 "$f" "${f%.*}.jpg"; done

On Fedora the package is called libheif-tools. GIMP can also open and export HEIC if it was built with HEIF support.

Can a website convert HEIC without uploading it?

Yes. Modern browsers can run compiled image decoders through WebAssembly, so the entire conversion can happen in your computer’s memory. The website delivers the converter code once; your photos are read from your disk, decoded, re-encoded as JPG and saved back to your disk, all without a network request that contains the photo.

That is how HEICJPG works. It uses libheif, the same open-source library behind heif-convert, compiled to WebAssembly and run inside a background worker in your browser tab. There is no upload step, which is also why conversion starts instantly and works for large batches.

The catch is that, from the outside, a local converter and an uploading converter can look identical. So do not take anyone’s word for it, including ours. Check.

How can I check whether a converter uploads my photos?

Open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network panel while you convert a file, and look for a request roughly as large as your photo. It takes about a minute:

  1. Open the converter website in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
  2. Press F12 (or Cmd + Option + I on a Mac) and open the Network tab.
  3. Click the clear button so the list is empty.
  4. Convert a HEIC file of a known size, say 2.4 MB.
  5. Look at the list of requests:
    • A POST or PUT request whose size is close to your photo’s size means the photo was uploaded.
    • Requests for .js or .wasm files are the page loading its own code. That is normal.
    • No large outgoing request means the conversion happened locally.

You can sort the Network list by Size to make an upload easy to spot. The same check works for any web tool that handles your files, not just image converters.

Checklist for private photo conversion

Before you convert sensitive photos, run through these five points:

  1. Process locally. Use a built-in OS tool or a browser-based converter you have verified with the Network panel.
  2. Decide on metadata. Keep EXIF for your own archive; strip it for anything you will post or send to strangers.
  3. Convert from the original. Avoid converting a JPG that was already converted once, since every re-save loses detail.
  4. Use quality 85–90. It is visually identical to the original for viewing, sharing and printing.
  5. Keep the HEIC originals until you have checked the JPGs. HEIC files hold depth and HDR data that a JPG cannot.

To understand what you gain and lose in the conversion itself, read HEIC vs JPG: Which Photo Format Should You Use?. If you would rather stop the iPhone from producing HEIC files in the first place, Why Does iPhone Save Photos as HEIC? covers the relevant settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to use an online HEIC converter?

It depends on how the converter works. Many online tools upload your photo to their server, convert it there and send it back. Tools that process files inside your browser never transmit the photo. You can check which kind you are using with your browser's Network panel.

Does converting HEIC to JPG remove the GPS location?

Not necessarily. Most converters copy EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates, into the JPG. If you plan to share the photo publicly, choose a converter or export option that strips metadata.

What is the fastest free way to convert HEIC on a Mac?

Select the files in Finder, right-click, choose Quick Actions and then Convert Image. Pick JPEG and the converted copies appear next to the originals.

Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows without installing anything?

Windows cannot decode HEIC until the HEIF Image Extensions and an HEVC codec are installed. If you cannot install them, a browser-based converter that processes files locally is the simplest option.
